Partnered television stations could also produce local news inserts to be carried on the channel in their market. The network later introduced an automation system to cycle its segments in a pre-recorded format, removing the need for them to be aired live. Shortly after launching, the network was rebranded as Headline News and later, CNN Headline News. These segments were conducted every half hour 24 hours a day, and regularly updated. The channel originally launched in 1982 as CNN2, a spin-off of CNN that featured a cycle of segments covering various areas of interest, such as news headlines, financial news, sports, entertainment, and lifestyle topics. A spin-off of CNN, it primarily carries a schedule of news programming during the daytime hours, with the remainder of its schedule dedicated to true crime programs.
